Discover the gentle versatility of Targhee wool! This relatively young breed of sheep was developed in the United States starting in 1926 through the selective crossbreeding of Rambouillet with Corriedale and Lincoln/Rambouillet. The goal was to breed a robust, adaptable sheep that produces both high-quality wool and meat—ideal for the vast landscapes and high plateaus of the American West. The breed owes its name to the Targhee National Forest, where the animals traditionally spend their summers.
It’s no coincidence that Targhee is also known as the “American Merino”: the fibers are wonderfully soft and fluffy, while the slightly longer staple length provides greater stability compared to pure Rambouillet. With a fineness of about 25 microns and a fiber length of 75–90 mm, you get an airy, elastic wool with matte curls and pronounced crimp.
The natural color is a pure white—perfect as a base for vibrant or soft dyes.
Targhee is ideal for clothing you want to wear every day without sacrificing comfort. Whether it’s scarves, shawls, sweaters, or cardigans—the fibers are pleasantly soft enough to wear next to the skin while offering enough substance for durable favorites. For high-wear projects, however, an even more robust fiber is recommended—Targhee remains your luxurious everyday companion.
