  • The natural-colored cotton is grown naturally in Peru. All colors become darker when they are washed in very hot water and machine-dried to a certain degree. The heat changes the color. If you want to retain the color, we recommend washing the cotton in cold water with gentle, biodegradable soap after processing. Then lay it out flat to dry. Do not leave the yarn in the sun for long periods of time, otherwise the color will fade over time…. especially the grown green tones. If you bring the green into contact with something acidic such as lemon juice or vinegar, it will turn brown immediately. BUT don’t worry…. Just wash the garment normally and it will return to its original color. Just as the acidic liquid discolored the green yarn, a biodegradable alkaline soap (like most soaps) will immediately turn it green again. The green will also turn brown over time in the sun. So if you take a little care, your green will always look just as beautiful as the other shades. If you are wondering about the color change after many washes and dryings, you should knit a small sample to test how it looks over time before you wash your finished project. To speed up the color change, you can boil the cotton in a spacious pot for about 20 minutes. If your water is acidic, you can add some baking soda to make the water more alkaline.
  • Organic cotton shrinks in length by 10-15% when heat is applied.

The earliest records of spinning date back nearly eight millennia, to Peru, where pakucho meant brown cotton in the ancient Inca language. Today, native~spun pakucho cotton is grown in shades of natural, cream, beige, brown, avocado and mauve. No pesticides, herbicides or other agricultural chemicals are used to grow and dye these yarns. All harvesting and color sorting is done by hand, just as it has been since cotton was domesticated in Peru over 4,500 years ago.” – James M. Vreeland Jr.

Another very important point is that Peru does not allow genetically modified seeds or plants produced with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the country. Thus, there is no risk of cross-contamination and the fibers remain organic without risk. GMOs are a complete devastation to natural and organic crops in the US and many other countries around the world.
